The Great War Memorial
During the period of Commemorations for the Centenary of the First World War, scheduled between 2014 and 2018, the Government will be in charge of implementing its initiatives as well as harmonising the activities promoted by the different authorities involved, by coordinating projects aimed to the same objectives.
The main goal is to set up an “Ecomuseum” throughout the Italian territory, thanks to an interinstitutional and participatory cooperation involving the entire Country.
At the end of the period of commemorations, in 2018, all these interventions will be channelled to the Great War Memorial: an integrated and systemic project, a narrative and educational as well as a physical and virtual place, a true “Network of memory” made up of sites, paths, monuments to study, restore, preserve and enhance, as well as museums and exhibition areas that through new evocative paths and systems to present materials, are able to tell – also to the young generations that are mentally and chronologically distant from those times – significant moments and stories of our national history and of the First World War.
The main components of the Memorial will be as follows:
- A historical, artistic and documentary heritage, either existing or to be gathered through a public invitation to the Italian population, called to donate heirlooms and family documents;
- Detailed narration of historical events, thanks to the highly fascinating educational-informative systems allowing an immediate reading;
- Multimedia tools and solutions, rich in historiographical contents and emotional charge, able to show facts and settings, by activating mechanisms of participation and involvement for the public.
The objective for 2018 – representing the year in which commemorations will come to an end – is to set up a historical, cultural and territorial path, made up not only of physical spaces – although recovered and included in a pathway of knowledge -, but also of the results obtained through researches and works on new or already-existing documentary Archives. All the above will be included in the “Virtual Memorial of the Great War”, a sort of “portal of portals” preserving the memories of the events that we will recall, also for future generations.
The first step in the development of the War Memorial is the reorganisation of the Casa della III Armata (House of the 3rd Army) in Redipuglia.
