The reorganisation of the naval museum and the Arsenal in Venice
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Task Force and the Italian Navy; it is closely connected to and stems from the memorandum of Understanding signed by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Defence, whose aim is the development of a project for the reorganisation of the Historical Naval Museum of Venice.
This project includes a focus on WW1, as well as the transformation into museums of some important historical spaces inside the Arsenal: the Boat Pavilion, with a great quantity of ancient and modern historical boats, some bunkers of the Great War, and a submarine.
To this end, a joint scientific Committee was established, involving the representatives of the Task Force and of the Italian Navy, besides historians, experts in military history, experts in navy history, museology scholars, representatives of the Monuments and the Fine Arts Office of Venice. The Committee worked on a general project that can be easily modified according to the funds available, and is aimed to underline the central role of the City during the First World War.
Venice, in fact, shall not be considered as a mere naval base, but also as a place of production of submarines as well as a pivotal navy air force, as witnessed by the materials and the physical traces kept both at the museum and at the Arsenal, which remained almost unchanged since then.
