RAI tells the Great War

The project on the Great War, edited by RaiEducational, will be developed from 2014 to 2018 through a heavily multimedia approach. Several productions are scheduled on RaiStoria channel, on the general-interest channels, the use of the portal www.grandeguerra.rai.it as well as APPs of History, Literature, Arts and Philosophy by the Educational unit.
Past productions:

  • Launch filmed sequence "La Grande Guerra", in 3D;
  • Restoration in HD of the series “La Grande Guerra” by Hombert Bianchi, made in 1965, a series presented by Carlo Lucarelli with the remarks and contextualisation by historians such as: Bruna Bianchi, Giovanni De Luna, Emilio Gentile, Mario Isnenghi, Giovanni Sabatucci and Lucio Villari. It was broadcasted on RaiStoria in seven episodes last November and December 2013.
  • Three documentaries with a duration of 52’: two biographies, "Gabriele D’Annunzio" and "Cesare Battisti", and "Costruendo la grande guerra", politics and society in Europe at the beginning of the 20th Century, intertwined with the construction of defence works from 1866 to 1914.

 
International coproduction:

  • RAIStoria acquired the series "Great War Diaries", eight episodes of 52’, which will be broadcasted in June-July 2014
  • In coproduction with the Austrian television ORF, "La Guerra Bianca", three episodes of 52’ each, whose broadcasting is scheduled for May 2015;
  • "Testimony 1914 – 18", a documentary, a website and an app with the testimonies from the Great War found in the EU TV Archives, in collaboration with EBU and other European broadcasters. Scheduled airing: December 2014.

Activities under production:

  • "Il tempo e la storia", anchored by Massimo Bernardini, thematic episodes.
  • "Eco della Storia", anchored by Gianni Riotta, "La Prima guerra".
  • "Diario della Grande Guerra", a daily broadcast starting on 28th June 2014, a few minutes every day to always highlight the Centenary of the Great War with letters from the front, press reviews, life at the front and behind the lines, precious collections, short films on museums and war memorials; furthermore, from 28th June to 27th July, the outbreak of the war everyday both on RaiStoria and on a general-interest channel.
  • "Diari della Grande Guerra", a weekly programme as from 28th June, host by Carlo Lucarelli, on the events that from the assassination in Sarajevo led to the war, from the perspective of the men and the women that witnessed them.
  • "14-18 ", a new series on the five years of war, with the contribution of historians; 20 episodes of 50’ each that will be broadcasted by RaiStoria in September 2014.

 
Furthermore, during the period 2014-2018 new documentaries will be produced to tell the main events and figures, as well as minor emblematic stories that help understanding those years of war. They will be broadcast on RaiStoria as well as on general-interest channels in slots to be determined.
